Half a century ago, when I studied Ancient Greek history, the Persians were the bad guys. The sources we were drawing from, the Greek narratives, focussed on Greek heroism. I may have forgotten much of the history I learned, but the battle of Thermopylae in 480 BCE has stayed in my memory. Those noble Spartans, those dastardly Persians! Herodotus may have exaggerated a bit, but surely the essential facts were correct, or so I hoped. I read a little about Darius and Xerxes, but our studies moved onto the Peloponnesian War, and I left Thermopylae and Herodotus behind.

He always writes very interesting things about the social and political history of the country and this book is actually a collection of essays that he has written on the Islamic revolution and its aftermath. Additionally, the column differed between the First and Second Persian Empire. The author tried to base his research on new archeological sources and only used the ancient Greek sources if he had too. I personally never really read much about ancient Persian history, and this book was a great introduction without the supposed Greek bias. He doesn't portray Achaemenids as good or bad, but gives a very balanced account. That Malcolm was able to effectively interrogate such sources was a testament to his immense cultural literacy. His ability to converse fluently in Persian utilising idioms familiar to his interlocutors, opened doors that would have been closed to others and allowed him to engage in discussions about for example, the role of women in Iranian society. He records a remarkably frank exchange with one of his Iranian companions, Jaffier Ali Khan: ‘You English take your ideas of the situation of females in Asia from what you hear and read of the harem of kings, rulers and chiefs, who being absolute over both men and women of their territories, indulge in a plurality of wives and mistresses…but you ought to recollect, that the great and the powerful, who have such establishments, are not in proportion of one to ten thousand of the population of the country.’

This is a must read if you are a history lover like I am! I didn’t know much about the Persian reign and about the Kings like Cyrus, Darius or Xerxes (to name a few) but this book offers so much information, and is written (told!) in such a clear language (the names might be a struggle sometimes) that everyone can enjoy this book! After the fall of the Achaemenid Empire in 330 BCE to Alexander the Great, Persian art was soon replaced by the Parthian Era. This existed as a temporary stage between the First and Second Persian Empire and ended up spanning from about 247 BCE until 224 CE. This led to an uncomplimentary mix of Greek and Iranian motifs in the art that was created, with Greek culture dominating momentarily.
