Description

Overall, the Celestron Travelscope 70 is a good little travel telescope for beginners or casual stargazers. You can see the Moon and planets like Jupiter and Saturn quite well, as well as some of the brighter deep-sky objects like the Orion Nebula. Overall, if you’re looking for a portable yet powerful telescope that delivers excellent performance at an affordable price point, then the Celestron TravelScope 70 is an excellent choice. Its compact size makes it easy to transport to any location where you can enjoy some stargazing without compromising on image quality or stability. With its high-quality eyepiece and finder scope plus impressive magnification range capabilities – this model is sure to exceed your expectations! Despite its many strengths, it does have a few weak points that may be important to consider before purchasing. The Celestron PowerSeeker 127EQ Telescope has a very long focal length and a very large aperture but falls to seventh because of its poor tripod and difficult collimation. In eighth place is the Celestron ExploraScope 22103 114AZ Reflector Telescope. It has some positives, but its problems mean that neither experts nor beginners will get good value out of it. The last place belongs to the Celestron Astro Fi 102, which is wi-fi ready and includes a smartphone adapter. The app’s poor performance and overall low-quality parts mean that few people will enjoy using it.

When it comes to understanding a telescope’s ability, the aperture is the primary trait to look for because it indicates how much light can be gathered to produce the magnified image. Greater aperture captures more light resulting in better image quality and the ability to see fainter heavenly bodies that are further away. There are a few problems with the mechanical design of the TS70. First of all, the (non-collimatable) lens cell, which is similar in design to the ShortTube 80’s and some other cheap achromats I’ve seen, was tightened extremely tight. I put in a lot of elbow grease to loosen the lens cell. The trouble is that this tightened lens cell actually bends the glass, creating “pinched optics.” You might not think glass can bend, but you’re only allowed to bend by 1/1000th the width of saran wrap, so screwing the lens cell down so tight makes the image noticeably fuzzier at high powers. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that the image at first was a mess. After loosening the lens cell just enough that I could hear a slight rattle when shaken (but not too much so that the scope would never be collimated), the image was much cleaner and sharper. Not compatible with #93648 Off-Axis Guider, not compatible with #93519 2" Mirror Diagonal (discontinued) Additionally, its long focal length allows for high-magnification views without sacrificing image clarity.

It comes with everything you need to get started, including an adjustable tripod and two eyepieces. One of the best features of this telescope is its ability to view planets such as Jupiter and Saturn. This telescope features an erecting eyepiece for easier viewing, a 5×24 finder scope located on the side, and a convenient phone adapter that allows you to take videos and pictures. The phone adapter also helps with searching for celestial bodies and can act as a finder. This telescope set weighs only 2.07kg, including the lightweight aluminium alt-az tripod with retractable legs. No tools are required for setup. Overall, the Celestron Travelscope 70 is perfect for beginners or anyone who loves traveling and exploring the night sky without compromising on quality. In my opinion the Travel Scope 70 is an entry-level telescope for those on-the-go or for a beginner user. Accessories include: two eyepieces (20mm and 10mm), 45° erect image diagonal, and 5x24 finderscope. Celestron’s PowerSeeker telescope features a 70mm aperture and a 700mm focal length. It comes with a Barlow lens, a 20mm and a 4mm eyepieces for 35x and 175x magnified viewing. A 5×24 finderscope is attached to the side of the main scope and an alt-azimuth aluminium tripod mount with a convenient accessory tray is also included. I like that the Travel Scope 70 comes with a lot of accessories including a full-size tripod, but again, expectations shouldn’t be set too high. Although the tripod is a fully-extendable one, it’s best suited for bench and table-top use. Fully extended, it’s too flimsy to support the lightweight frame of the scope and I feel it becomes very unstable to look through.
